How to Install RAM

For the Do-It-Yourselfers out there, one of the easier tasks is installing a new stick of RAM in your computer. The first trick, however, is to figure out exactly what kind you need. There are a few ways to do this:

Most memory manufacturers have a search tool you can use to find the right type of RAM. The following are just a few you can use:

Once you've determined (and bought) the type of RAM you need, it's time to get to work.

  1. Shut down your computer, and unplug the power source. (For desktops, you may want to unplug everything else as well for ease of moving the computer and access)


  2. If you are installing RAM in a desktop: Open the case. Depending on your computer manufacturer, you may need a screwdriver for this step.
    If you are installing RAM in a laptop: turn the computer over. There should be a small icon which looks like a memory chip. Under this panel is where you'll find the computer's memory. You will need a small screwdriver for this step.


  3. Desktop: Locate the RAM on your motherboard. It will look like the one you bought.
    Laptop: Proceed to step 4


  4. On either side (longways) of the strip, you will see two clamps. Release these and the RAM should pop out of the slot.


  5. Take the new RAM that you bought, and place it into the slot. It will only go in one way so DON'T FORCE IT!
    Laptop: Press the RAM gently back down, and proceed to step 7


  6. Apply a bit of pressure to the top of the RAM strip, and the clamps should lock it in place.


  7. That's it! Close up your computer
