Signs its time for a new computer...

The decision to get a new computer isn't always cut and dry. Sometimes, it may be hard to realize when it really is time for a new computer. The following suggestions and signs may help guide you as to whether or not you need to upgrade.

So, your computer is getting up there in age, and you aren't sure when to get a new one. First, don't panic. Second, realize that it will end up costing you more to maintain an older computer than to buy a new one. A good rule of thumb: If your support bill is going to be over $500 (Don't forget to add together multiple support bills, if applicable), look into getting a new computer. For a basic computer, capable of word processing, email, and internet access, you shouldn't need to spend more than $500-$700. Of course, higher-end computers may be worth supporting for a little more, but remember the rule of thumb. Now, this isn't to say that your computer isn't worth that $500 to support, especially if you have irreplacable data on that computer. Most times your support professional can migrate your data to your new system without much of a problem, however, and at a substantially lower cost.

Now, all of this doesn't mean that you should throw out your old computer on a whim. Buying a computer, like many other purchases, should be done after thoughtful consideration and a bit of research.

Just because there's something wrong doesn't mean it's trash day.

Things can and will go wrong with any machine as complex as a computer. It's a natural happening. While preventive maintenance can help you to keep your computer error-free, there will always be those times when the computer needs a little help. Just because this happens, does not mean that it's time for a new computer. Making a phone call to your support service or system manufacturer because of a problem with your system isn't a good indicator that your computer is going down the drain. In fact, it's healthy to have your computer looked at every now and then to make sure everything is in good working order, much like it can be helpful to have your automobile looked at every now and then. If, however, your support technician is on your phone's speed dial, then it may be time to consider replacing your old computer for something more reliable.
